Primary and Secondary Schools

City of Edinburgh Council

City of Edinburgh Council runs 88 primary and 23 secondary schools, which, in 2013-14, educated over 44,000 pupils. The city also has 18 independent private schools, which, in 2011-12, educated almost 11,000 pupils.

In 2012, only 2% of publicly funded secondary school leavers in Edinburgh left with no qualifications. Some 37% left with at least one Higher, and a further 22% left with at least one Advanced Higher or Higher National Certificate.

Midlothian Council

Midlothian Council runs 30 primary and six secondary schools.

In 2012, only 1% of publicly funded secondary school leavers in Midlothian left with no qualifications. Some 35% left with at least one Higher, and a further 18% left with at least one Advanced Higher or Higher National Certificate.

Scottish Borders Council

Scottish Borders Council runs 63 primary and nine secondary schools, which educate almost 18,000 pupils. There is one independent private school in the area, St Mary’s in Melrose.

In 2012, only 1% of publicly funded secondary school leavers in the Scottish Borders left with no qualifications. Some 40% left with at least one Higher, and a further 19% left with at least one Advanced Higher or Higher National Certificate.
